At this point, we’re all probably aware of the effects of sleep on our health and wellbeing. Lack of quality sleep is associated with everything from impaired memory to increased risk of heart disease. But did you know that getting enough consistent, quality sleep may also be your body’s secret weapon to recover from injury?
Human growth hormone, or HGH, is a naturally occurring hormone released by your pituitary gland that aids in all kinds of important processes, including boosting muscle and bone growth and tissue repair. Studies have also shown an association between HGH and the healing process. The majority of our body’s HGH is released while we are engaged in deep sleep, so optimizing our sleep can be an important factor in HGH production.
We know, we know - easier said than done, right? Here are a few tips to get you started on your way to catching your best zzz’s:
Go to bed and wake up around the same time every day - yes, even on the weekends!
Turn off the TV (or phone, or tablet) and start winding down 30-60 minutes before you go to bed. Read a book, stretch or foam roll, and relax.
Limit alcohol and caffeine intake, especially close to bed time.
Treat sleep like part of your training program! It’s not going to happen unless you make it happen.
